After a twelve-year break from recording, Dave McConnell never intended to launch a new music project. Encouraged to return to the studio with no expectations beyond recording a single song, one session with producer Michael Bell at Start Together Studios quickly became something much bigger. That unexpected creative spark gave birth to Good Swim.

Since returning, Good Swim has quietly built momentum with a string of impressive releases. January's debut single Paper Tiger marked McConnell's return, followed by Solstice and Simulation Theory. Together, the songs established Good Swim as an exciting new voice within Northern Ireland's contemporary folk scene while attracting thousands of streams online.

Now comes A Mark On You, a beautifully understated slow-burn that leans heavily into Americana while remaining rooted in contemporary folk. Built around a warm blend of acoustic guitar, subtle electric textures and traditional folk influences, the song creates an immersive atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive.

McConnell's vocal performance is one of the song's greatest strengths. His delivery feels completely natural, carrying genuine emotion without ever becoming overdramatic. Every lyric feels lived-in, making it easy to connect with the story unfolding throughout the track. Meanwhile, the understated drumming quietly anchors the arrangement, allowing the song to breathe while maintaining a steady emotional pulse.

The production also benefits from some inspired musical collaborations. Joel Harkin's expressive pedal steel and Chris McCorry's tasteful electric guitar work elevate the song beyond a simple acoustic performance. Their contributions gradually widen the sonic landscape, adding depth, texture and subtle dynamics that perfectly complement McConnell's songwriting.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Good Swim explains:

Sometimes big-crazy-life-changing things happen, and those things end up controlling us. Changing how we think, how we act and how we feel. That's the mark. The chorus speaks to that a bit. There was a pretty long journey I had to go on to not have a lot of hate in my heart about things that have happened to me. I'm maybe still walking on that road, it's a constant thing.

At its heart, A Mark On You explores how trauma quietly reshapes our identity and the way we view the world. It tells the story of a trans young person forced to leave home after love and acceptance are overshadowed by faith and belief. Rather than dwelling solely on pain, the song ultimately finds hope through acceptance, recognising that healing often begins when we find the strength to move forward ourselves.

It's a deeply compassionate piece of songwriting that never feels preachy or heavy-handed. Instead, Good Swim allows empathy, vulnerability and honesty to guide the narrative, creating something that feels universally relatable regardless of personal experience.

With A Mark On You, Good Swim continues to prove that his return to music was well worth the wait. Combining thoughtful storytelling, understated musicianship and rich Americana influences, the single stands as one of his strongest releases to date and further cements Good Swim as one of Northern Ireland's most compelling emerging folk artists.
