Dreaming Is Allowed
Released in 2019 during the Fleadh - Dreaming Is Allowed - is a real gem of an album cementing Sean Mathews as a great solo artist and songwriter.
Sean's journey into folk music continues and - Dreaming Is Allowed - is proof. Originally forming rock bands with brother Brian ('The Profile' and 'Strange Glue') in the early 2000's Sean has accumulated a collection of original songs about the true realities of life.
After moving away from rock (and to the west of Ireland for a short time) Sean returned to his musical roots with his first solo EP - Holding the Fort - released in 2014.
2019 would see Sean enter the studio once more recording in the historic Millmount tower - Dreaming is Allowed - features a mix of stringed instruments and delivery styles with local musicians Breifne Holohan, Grace Dillon, Trudy Maguire adding additional stringed instruments, percussion and accordion with Holohan taken charge of production.
All songs are originals except - The Workers Song - written by Scottish folk musician Ed Pickford.
Sean's draws from the experience of growing up in the commuter town of Drogheda tackling subjects that cut deep into the fabric of society. "The Commuters Song" talks about the joys of the celtic tiger and what followed....ass going numb from traffic... while "Tie The Knot" deals with the subject of love and marriage.
Both "Morrissey And The Russian" and "Appreciate Life" see Sean's skill as a Sean-nós singer.
Sean's 12 sting guitar is evident throughout the album and the use of different tunings results in beautiful melodies. "Dreaming Is Allowed" title track is by far the stand out track on this album. The 12 sting guitar rings out accompanied by amazing vocals and harmonies.
Sean has performed on a regular basis throughout lock-down on both Facebook and Youtube.
