Von Venn, release 90s Vibes with twisted intentions

Music Review | 9th July, 2025 Von Venn Von Venn

Originally brought together by Gary Cox in 2022 to perform a collection of his songs written and recorded in demo form during the COVID lockdowns, Von Venn fine-tuned their sound at Soundcaster Studios in Dublin, Ireland. The result was the album Jennie Is Out, which received critical acclaim across multiple music publications.

Cox draws on influences from past indie and alternative greats while still crafting a distinctive style and sound of his own. From songwriters such as John Lennon and David Bowie to the sounds of Television, Wilco, and Radiohead, his influences are wide-ranging, resulting in a truly original sound.

The latest single, You Can Talk To Me, drips with ’90s‑indie swagger. A dirty‑cool guitar riff rides on top of pounding drums and bass, pulling you right in. The lyrics play out like two wandering souls messing with each other—little mind games, half‑smiles, and who, me? excuses. They keep claiming, we’re just killing time, but everyone knows where the night’s headed.

I have always been fascinated by what drives us as human beings, the complexity of our emotions, the multiple layers that we are capable of operating at....our ability to hide and even deceive ourselves as to our true intentions. I think these elements become even more interesting when taken in the context of sexual tension between a couple. They engage in game of desire and denial. This becomes even more apparent when the relationship is considered conventionally frowned upon, eg an affair, or inappropriate work relationship.
I introduced a double negative to the chorus to emphasise that at a deeper level the protagonists know that they are engaged in something inappropriate.
