Alt-rockers Dexterity drop genre-bending groove monster

Music Review | 20th July, 2025 Dexterity Dexterity

Dexterity are a four-piece alt/prog rock band blending the heavy vibes of progressive metal with the raw edge of alternative rock. Think funky guitars, killer rhythms, and melodies that linger long after the set’s over. Over the past three years, they've been carving out their space in Dublin’s live music scene, and it’s paying off.

Holding it all down is the backline: bassist Adrianna Matthews, drummer Alex Rose, and guitarists Cian Somers and Nathan O'Maoilearca. Together, they lock into grooves that make even the most complex rhythms feel effortless. Their latest single, Raise The Dead, is a perfect example—tight, textured, and totally captivating.

Raise The Dead brings serious Red Hot Chili Peppers meets Rage Against the Machine energy, blending funk-rock grooves with a gritty rock-edge. It kicks off with punchy, funky chord patterns and a rock-solid beat, layered under tight, rap-style vocals. Then, the track shifts gears—slowing down into a darker, moodier vibe with brooding rhythms that hit hard. It’s a bold, dynamic track that shows real range.

Lyrically, Raise the Dead is about dealing with grief and loss, examining the experience of putting on a mask for others in order to function in the world.

The mask isn't real, it's ethereal and struggles to maintain its shape. Sometimes the mask breaks to reveal what's underneath.
The journey of grief is at first, feeling nothing and wondering why. That feeling dissolves into blaming everyone who's living, living in denial that someone is really gone, and desperately begging them to come back and be alive again. - Sarah Dexter
