Belfast’s own Midnight Housework describe themselves as bittersweet alt ambient rock
, and it fits perfectly. Their music lives in that weird, electric space between fear, excitement, and pure, naïve bliss. Their sound is a storm of chaotic energy with sudden bursts of calm.
Their latest single, Just To Be Enough, marks release number four for the band. It’s a blend of shoegaze and indie rock, loaded with swirling guitars, shimmering synths, heavy-hitting drums, and vocals that really cut through.
This song had a unique genesis, unlike our previous three releases it was not preconceived or planned. It was still built from the bones of a Fez guitar idea, but that guitar idea was supposed to be a new section for a different song we were working on. Fez brought it in and told us he had a new part to try slot into the song, but as soon as he started playing it, we all instinctively erupted into a completely different jam that went on for about 8 minutes. When we were finished, I said 'sh*t man, I think that's actually just a new song.
So we trimmed out all the baggage from the 8-minute jam and added some spice and there we had it, another new song that felt really exciting to play, completely by accident! The “rhythm bros” Blaine and Luke had it locked in from the get-go, it was heavily vibing. We tested it out live and it got a really cool response from the crowd, so we thought yeah let's record this one next.
I guess lyrically it's just about what it says on the tin, how hard it can feel sometimes to simply just be enough for something, or someone. I'm sure we've all felt that way at some point, this song is saying you're not alone and you most definitely ARE enough, despite how hard that can feel at times.- Midnight Housework
