The Riptide Movement Mark 20 Years with Powerful New Single 800 Years

It’s almost too easy at this point to say that The Riptide Movement have cemented themselves as one of Ireland’s most authentic, hard-working rock outfits - but honestly, it’s true. Over the years, they’ve carved out a sound that slips effortlessly between indie, folk, blues, and classic rock without ever feeling forced. It’s just...them. And if you’ve ever caught them live, you’ll know that reputation is well earned - these guys have shared stages with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, and Neil Young, and held their own every single time.

Now, instead of coasting on that legacy, the lads are doing what they do best to mark 20 years in the game: putting out new music. Enter 800 Years, their second release of the year - and one that hits a little deeper than you might expect.

Clocking in at a sprawling eight minutes, 800 Years sees the band lean into something more atmospheric, almost cinematic. It starts off slow and reflective before building into this hypnotic, chant-like chorus that sticks with you. There’s a steady, droning pulse running through the track, giving it this almost trance-like quality. It’s rooted in Irish folk, sure, but there’s also a cool, understated edge that wouldn’t feel out of place on a The Velvet Underground record.

Lyrically, it’s weighty stuff. The song digs into inherited memory and the long shadow of history - specifically the kind that doesn’t just stay in the past. It touches on intergenerational trauma, identity, and how stories (and scars) get passed down over time. At its core, it’s asking a deceptively simple question: how much of the past are we still carrying around with us?

With everything happening in the world today, it sometimes feels like we haven't learned much in 800 years. The song came from reflecting on that idea - how history can echo across generations, and how the struggles and stories of the past still shape the present.

Recorded at Orphan Recording Studios and produced by Gavin Glass, 800 Years feels like a real statement piece. It’s reflective, ambitious, and unafraid to sit in its own atmosphere.

Two decades in, 800 Years shows a band still pushing themselves - not just looking back for nostalgia’s sake, but using the past to make sense of right now. And honestly, that might be the most rock ’n’ roll move of all.
