Eldritch Observations: Irish Nu-Metal Heavyweights Unleash Their Most Pop Song Yet
Since bursting onto the scene in 2021, Cell Games have proudly carried the torch for Irish nu-metal, carving out their own space with razor-sharp songwriting, infectious melodies and a healthy obsession with pop culture. Never ones to play by the rules, the band have built a reputation for delivering music that's as unpredictable as it is ridiculously catchy.
Their prolific output has seen a string of successful singles, culminating in their landmark debut EP, You Have (Not) Heard These Songs Before
, released late last year. Rather than take their foot off the pedal, Cell Games are back with Eldritch Observations
, a track they're boldly calling their most pop song yet.
There's always been more to Cell Games than crushing guitars and massive choruses. The band have a strong social conscience and aren't afraid to speak out against injustice, particularly when it comes to the devastating impact of war and the hypocrisy of those who turn a blind eye to suffering.
Frontman Maximillion makes his feelings clear:
Every time I see an Irish voice raised under a Palestinian flag, or someone staring down arrest in the UK while standing against the polite hypocrisy of the state, it strips away the cynicism and renews my faith in what's left of our humanity- Maximillion
That willingness to speak their minds is part of what makes Cell Games such an interesting prospect. They're a band with plenty to say, but they're equally determined to keep things moving musically. With Eldritch Observations
, they've pushed themselves into slightly unfamiliar territory without abandoning the aggression that got them here.
Eldritch ObservationsHits Like a Sledgehammer
If calling this their most pop song yet has you expecting something a little softer, think again. Eldritch Observations
wastes absolutely no time getting stuck in, with impossibly thick guitars tearing through the speakers from the opening seconds. It's a suitably ferocious introduction that immediately reminds you exactly who you're dealing with.
Just as you're settling into the chaos, everything suddenly pulls back. The guitars make room for a surprisingly melodic verse, allowing the vocals to take centre stage. It's a clever change of pace, offering a brief moment of calm before Cell Games decide they've given you more than enough breathing space.
That calm doesn't last long. The vocals become increasingly furious as a relentless drumbeat comes crashing in, driven forward by a bassline that gives the whole thing some serious weight. The contrast between the melodic passages and the heavier sections works brilliantly, keeping you guessing where the song might head next.
Then comes the chorus, and it's an absolute belter. The aggression gives way to a soaring, fist-in-the-air singalong that feels tailor-made for a packed room. It's the kind of chorus that will have audiences roaring every word back at the band, whether they've heard the song once or a hundred times.
The recording of Eldritch Observations came together during a weekend off while the band were touring with Words That Burn. Having never performed the song live, Cell Games entered the studio with room to experiment, once again teaming up with longtime collaborators JSR Audio and artist Jade Costello.
Working with Josh at JSR Audio, the band explored different approaches to the verses, allowing the song to take shape as they recorded. That willingness to try things out has paid off, with the finished track moving confidently between melodic hooks, bursts of aggression and electronic touches.
Jade Costello's artwork is another striking piece of the puzzle. Drawing on eldritch horror, the unsettling imagery and unusual colour palette suggest some unfortunate creature has been captured, killed and subjected to an X-ray. It's wonderfully weird, slightly disturbing and exactly the sort of visual you'd expect from Cell Games.
Eldritch Observations
Eldritch Observations
is another cracking release from a band who seem incapable of standing still. With monstrous guitars, furious vocals and a chorus that absolutely demands to be shouted back from the front row, Cell Games have delivered a track that's both punishingly heavy and ridiculously catchy.
If this is what Cell Games consider their most pop song yet, we'd love to hear what happens when they really decide to let loose. Irish nu-metal is in very safe hands, and Eldritch Observations is further proof that this band have no intention of slowing down anytime soon.
The single, Eldritch Observations, is available through all streaming platforms.
