Sort Me Out
Pulling from indie, punk, psychedelia and just about everything in between, Belfast five-piece Sweet Neptune have never seemed particularly interested in staying in one musical lane.
Known for sharp wit, energetic live shows and a fondness for taking their nautical name to its logical conclusion - sea-themed stage gear included - the band have built their identity around a strange but effective balance of satire, sincerity and modern-day absurdity.
Their earlier material found plenty of inspiration in the everyday realities of Irish life, pairing clever lyricism with a restless indie sound. But Sweet Neptune have been getting noisier, stranger and increasingly abrasive of late, twisting post-punk into something that feels distinctly their own.
And their latest single, Sort Me Out, pushes that evolution even further.
Sort Me Out
is Sweet Neptune’s first major musical release since their October 2025 debut album, Tridents, Pints & Fegs & Horses
, and sees the band honing in on the increasingly noisy strain of post-punk that has been gathering momentum around Belfast.
There’s no gentle introduction here.
The track opens with a few fuzzy, distorted notes before a relentless drum beat comes crashing in, immediately establishing a frantic, driving tempo. From there, Sort Me Out
rarely gives you a chance to catch your breath.
Different guitar riffs dip in and out of the mix, creating a restless wall of sound that always seems to be threatening to fall apart without ever quite doing so. There’s an almost nervous energy running through the whole thing, and the further the track goes, the more chaotic it becomes.
The vocals are just as important to the atmosphere. Delivered in a biting, cynical spoken-word style, they shift between deadpan muttering and a full punk snarl, adding to the sense that everything is gradually spiralling out of control.
By the time Sort Me Out
reaches its conclusion, any remaining restraint has disappeared and the song collapses into a glorious mass of noise and chaos.
Lyrically, ‘Sort Me Out
is ridiculous — deliberately so.
But the song itself is anything but a joke.
Beneath all the absurdity is a very real sense of frustration, delivered with the urgency and intensity of a band who sound like they mean every word. The situations might be completely stupid, but the irritation behind them is instantly recognisable.
Being denied a bottle of Jarritos. Accidentally exfoliating your face with something you thought was moisturiser. The misery of surge pricing when you're trying to get a late-night taxi home.
In Sweet Neptune's hands, these tiny inconveniences suddenly feel like genuine existential crises.
And that's really where Sort Me Out
works best. It takes the sort of completely insignificant annoyances that can somehow ruin your entire day and blows them wildly out of proportion. It’s funny because it’s ridiculous, but also because we’ve probably all had moments where something equally stupid has felt like the final straw.
Naturally, the band themselves aren't taking their latest stylistic shift too seriously.
Taking aim at both themselves and the increasingly fashionable post-punk and noise scene, Sweet Neptune jokingly describe Sort Me Out
as their attempt to cash in on the genre’s supposed cash cow
.
According to the band, they have carefully studied what people currently think is cool and scientifically created
a song designed to impress listeners in vintage thrifted loafers and cropped ’90s dress shirts.
They reckon anyone dealing with the genuinely devastating real-world struggles of buying the wrong moisturising cream at an airport or facing late-night taxi surge pricing should feel particularly seen.
It’s very Sweet Neptune.
They’re poking fun at the scene they're increasingly becoming part of, while simultaneously delivering a track that proves they can comfortably operate within it.
Sort Me Out
feels like Sweet Neptune taking another confident step away from straightforward indie territory and deeper into something more abrasive, unpredictable and interesting.
The fuzzy guitars, relentless drums and snarling spoken vocals give the track an almost claustrophobic energy, while the absurd lyrics stop all that intensity from becoming overly serious.
Most importantly, though, the joke never gets in the way of the song.
Sort Me Out
is chaotic, funny, cynical and deliberately rough around the edges — but underneath all of that noise is a seriously effective post-punk track.
The single, Sort Me Out, is available through all streaming platforms.
