Having spent more than a decade performing on the cover-band circuit, Pamela Tully finally took the plunge into writing and releasing her own music in 2022. Her debut independent single, BattleCry Baby
, kicked off a new chapter, drawing on influences from P!NK and Kelly Clarkson to Lady Gaga, Becky Hill and Self Esteem.
Since then, she's been building a catalogue of honest, straight-talking pop-rock songs that tackle everything from heartbreak and recovery to finding the strength to move forward. Don't Think You Own Me
, her sixth single, takes that same approach but comes with an extra helping of defiance.
There's no gentle introduction here. Don't Think You Own Me
gets straight down to business, with Tully delivering a fierce vocal performance against a backdrop of heavy electro-pop programming, driving bass and punchy synths. It's bold, direct and has the kind of energy that immediately grabs your attention.
As the track develops, layers of backing vocals add more weight to the arrangement, eventually building into an anthemic, chant-like delivery. There's a real sense of frustration being let loose, with the electronic production giving Tully plenty of room to push her vocals and get her point across.
At its heart, Don't Think You Own Me
is about something far too many women will recognise. Being talked over, underestimated, controlled or made to feel that their opinions don't carry the same weight. Tully takes those everyday frustrations and turns them into a very clear message: enough is enough.
But this isn't a song about hating men or dismissing relationships altogether. It's about refusing to lose yourself in one. Tully makes the distinction between wanting someone in your life and needing someone to make decisions for you. There's nothing wrong with love and support, but ownership is another matter entirely.
The inspiration comes partly from Tully's own experiences of sitting in meetings, knowing exactly what she's talking about, only to have someone speak over her. It's a situation that will sound painfully familiar to plenty of listeners, and she channels that frustration into something much bigger than a workplace complaint.
Behind the track is producer Stuart Gray of Jealoustown Studios, who has worked with Tully since BattleCry Baby
back in 2022. That ongoing partnership has given her the opportunity to develop her sound across six independent singles, while staying true to the direct, personal approach that runs through her songwriting.
With more original music planned for 2027, there's clearly plenty more to come from Pamela Tully. She's already shown that she's comfortable tackling difficult subjects, and this latest release suggests she's becoming increasingly confident about how she wants those stories to sound.
Dont Think You Own Me
Don't Think You Own Me
is a feisty, synth-heavy pop anthem that finds Pamela Tully standing up for herself and encouraging others to do the same. The driving bass, layered vocals and chant-like delivery give the track plenty of bite, while its message is refreshingly straightforward.
It's not about pushing people away. It's about knowing your worth, setting boundaries and refusing to let someone else decide who you should be.
The single, Dont Think You Own Me, is available through all streaming platforms.
