After a busy summer that saw Podge Lane play around 80 shows across New York, the Irish singer-songwriter is back home and gearing up for the release of his new album, Ebb And Flow And The Great Unknown. While there is no confirmed release date for the album just yet, Lane is giving us a taste of what's to come with his latest single, The Coast.

And if this track is anything to go by, the new album could be something special.

The Coast Is A Raw And Honest Folk Song

The Coast feels like a modern take on the old seafaring warning to keep your eyes on the horizon. At its heart, it's a simple story about two people who don't quite fit together, but Lane uses that idea to explore something much bigger.

It's about becoming so caught up in trying to make something work that you eventually lose sight of yourself.

Musically, The Coast keeps things stripped back and beautifully raw. The track was recorded as a full live performance in an old fishing shed in rural Ireland, straight to tape, and that setting seems to add another layer of character to the song.

Lane's acoustic guitar comes crashing in with a rough, almost unruly energy, giving the track plenty of grit without taking away from its storytelling. There are hints of the driving acoustic sound of Bruce Springsteen alongside the more contemporary folk style of artists such as Zach Bryan, but Lane still manages to make the song feel very much his own.

There is something wonderfully unpolished about The Coast. Rather than hiding behind layers of production, Lane lets the performance breathe. The result is intimate, atmospheric and honest.

Lyrically, the song carries more weight than its straightforward folk arrangement might initially suggest. The relationship at the centre of the story becomes a metaphor for losing yourself while trying desperately to make something work.

With Lane now preparing for a run of Irish shows, including performances in seaside locations and in-store appearances, The Coast feels like a fitting introduction to the next chapter of his music.

Final Verdict

The Coast is a beautifully raw piece of Irish folk songwriting that puts storytelling and atmosphere ahead of unnecessary production. The live recording gives it a genuine sense of character, while Lane's powerful acoustic guitar and reflective lyrics make the track easy to connect with.

The Coast is an honest, atmospheric and wonderfully rustic introduction to what Podge Lane has in store with Ebb And Flow And The Great Unknown.
