Rita's Road
Moving to the other side of the world is a big step, but leaving family and friends behind isn't always easy. Dublin singer-songwriter Ryan Flanagan knows that feeling all too well, and it's something he explores on his debut single, Rita's Road
, a personal track about home, family and the moments we miss while living abroad.
Originally from Dublin and now based in Sydney, Australia, Ryan Flanagan is beginning to make his mark as a solo artist. Drawing on Irish folk and contemporary singer-songwriter influences, his music puts storytelling front and centre, with the people, places and experiences from his own life providing much of the inspiration.
His first release, Rita's Road
, is a fitting introduction. Rather than going for something big or overly complicated, Flanagan keeps things simple, allowing the story to do most of the work. It's a song that will likely strike a chord with anyone who has packed their bags and left Ireland behind.
Rita's RoadKeeps Things Simple And Personal
Musically, Rita's Road
is built around a stripped-back, strummed acoustic guitar, with subtle strings sitting quietly in the background. There's nothing particularly flashy about the arrangement, but that's part of its appeal. The guitar carries the song along nicely, while the strings add a little extra warmth without getting in the way.
Flanagan's vocals have a raw, unpolished quality that suits the track. There's a strong sense of traditional Irish storytelling in his delivery, and he sounds comfortable letting the words speak for themselves. As he name-checks familiar places back home, the song begins to feel like a letter sent from Australia to Ireland.
A Song Inspired By Family And The Reality Of Living Abroad
The title itself has a particularly personal meaning. Rita's Road
is named after Flanagan's grandmother, Rita, and the song came from his growing awareness that while he was building a new life in Australia, the people he loved back in Ireland were continuing with theirs.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the release, Flanagan explains:
Rita's Road, named after my amazing grandmother Rita, is the first song I have ever released. I believe the best way to describe this song, would be through one of the lyrics. 'Give her hope, that I'll return before she grows old'.
He goes on to explain how writing the song made him think about the moments he would inevitably miss while living so far away. Birthdays, family gatherings and the ordinary days spent with loved ones don't stop happening when someone moves abroad, and those are the moments that can't always be made up for later.
That idea sits right at the heart of 'Rita's Road
. It's not just about missing Dublin or wanting to visit home for a few days. It's about the uncomfortable realisation that life keeps moving on without you, even when you're thousands of miles away trying to make a life of your own.
For a debut release, Rita's Road
is a promising start from Ryan Flanagan. The acoustic arrangement is straightforward, the vocals feel genuine, and the story is one that many Irish people living overseas will understand. It's not trying to reinvent the folk singer-songwriter formula, but it doesn't really need to.
What makes 'Rita's Road' worth a listen is the personal story behind it. Flanagan has taken a feeling familiar to so many people who have left home and turned it into a simple, honest song. It's a solid first introduction to an Irish songwriter with more stories to tell.
