The Corrs are one of Ireland's biggest musical success stories, mixing traditional Irish folk music with catchy pop songs that took them around the world. Made up of four siblings from Dundalk, the band became household names during the 1990s and early 2000s, selling millions of records and producing some of the most recognisable Irish pop hits of their generation.
The Corrs officially formed in Dundalk, County Louth, in 1990, with siblings Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim Corr bringing their musical talents together. Music was already a big part of family life, thanks to their parents Gerry and Jean, who performed together as a duo. Growing up surrounded by music, the four developed a sound combining Irish folk traditions with modern pop influences.
The Corrs got an early break through the 1991 Irish film The Commitments, with Andrea landing the role of Sharon Rabbitte. Her siblings Jim, Sharon and Caroline also made minor appearances as musicians. It proved to be an important opportunity, as the film's music director, John Hughes, spotted their potential and went on to become their manager, helping launch their recording career.
The Corrs released their debut album, Forgiven, Not Forgotten
, in 1995, introducing their unique mix of Irish traditional music and radio-friendly pop. Featuring singles such as Runaway
and the title track, the album gradually gained attention at home and abroad. With Andrea's distinctive vocals and the band's blend of violin, tin whistle and guitar, they were beginning to find their own identity.
Things really took off with their second album, Talk on Corners
, released in 1997. Although it initially enjoyed steady success, remixed versions of What Can I Do?
and their cover of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams
helped push the band into the mainstream. Suddenly, The Corrs were everywhere, with their polished pop sound attracting a much wider international audience.
The album went on to become the UK's biggest-selling album of 1998, an incredible achievement for four siblings from Dundalk. Songs such as So Young
also became major favourites, while television appearances and sold-out concerts helped build their popularity. By the end of the decade, The Corrs had become one of Ireland's most successful musical exports, with fans across Europe and beyond.
The Corrs continued their success with In Blue
in 2000, an album that moved further towards mainstream pop. Its lead single, Breathless
, became one of their biggest international hits, reaching number one in the UK. They followed it with Borrowed Heaven
in 2004 and Home in 2005, the latter returning to their Irish musical roots with traditional songs and family favourites.
After years of touring and recording, the band took an extended break to focus on family life and individual projects. They eventually reunited for White Light
in 2015, followed by Jupiter Calling
in 2017. Their return showed that the musical chemistry between the siblings was still there, and they continued performing live, bringing their best-known songs to audiences old and new.
The Corrs built an impressive collection of hit singles, with Runaway
, What Can I Do?
, Dreams
, So Young
and Breathless
among their most popular tracks. Breathless
remains one of their signature songs, while Runaway
has become something of a classic. Their ability to combine memorable pop melodies with traditional Irish instruments helped give their music a sound that stood out on the radio.
Across their career, The Corrs released seven studio albums, beginning with Forgiven, Not Forgotten
in 1995 and followed by Talk on Corners
(1997), In Blue
(2000), Borrowed Heaven
(2004), Home
(2005), White Light
(2015) and Jupiter Calling
(2017). Their catalogue also includes the hugely successful The Best of The Corrs compilation and the popular MTV Unplugged live album.
The Corrs helped bring Irish music to a worldwide pop audience without completely losing touch with their traditional roots. Their mix of family harmonies, catchy songwriting and Irish instrumentation made them different from many other bands of the time. From small beginnings in Dundalk to topping charts around the world, their success remains a standout chapter in Irish music history.
